The Three Part Breakdown and the Borrow Rule
The age is read in calendar units, not as a day count divided by an average. The years come from the year difference, the months from the month difference, and the days from the day difference, and when the day goes negative, the month drops by one and the day is topped up with the length of the month before the current one. Read on September 3, 2026 instead of September 18, the day difference is 3 minus 15, which is negative 12, so the month falls from 8 to 7 and the day becomes 19 after adding the 31 days of August: 36 years 7 months 19 days. The same person is 36 years 8 months 3 days old on September 18 and 36 years 7 months 19 days old on September 3, a gap of exactly 15 days.
Total Days, Weeks, and Hours: The Linear Count
Below the breakdown, the result line gives the same span as a pure count. From January 15, 1990 to September 18, 2026 is 13395 days, the weeks come from dividing by 7 and flooring, which is 1913 weeks, and the hours are the days times 24, which is 321480 hours, a clean multiple because they are derived from the day count rather than measured from the clock. The Countdown to the Next Birthday
The third line finds the next occurrence of the birth month and day after today and counts the days to it. From September 18, 2026 the next January 15 is 119 days away: 12 through September, 31 through October, 30 through November, 31 through December, and 15 into January. That landing date is the future date question the future date article covers, with the birthday as the target and the remaining days as the span. The countdown restarts from a full year on the birthday itself, about 365 days, because the test treats the birthday as already passed the moment it arrives. And a birth date in the future is refused with an error line instead of a negative age.
February 29 and the Local Midnight Parse
A leap day birth date carries the rollover rule of the month math: in a non leap year there is no February 29, so the next birthday lands on March 1, and the person born February 29, 2000 celebrates on March 1, 2027 and returns to February 29 in 2028. The day difference math also depends on the birth date being read as local midnight, not UTC midnight, because a UTC parse reads a day early in every timezone west of UTC and corrupts the day borrow shown above.
Where Age Is an Input
The age figure is the entry ticket for several other calculators. Carrying the Birth Date into Code
When the birth date has to travel into code, a server, or a form that wants seconds, the Unix Timestamp Converter rewrites it as a single integer count of seconds from the epoch, with the timezone choice made explicit. The age itself stays a difference question all the way down: one end pinned to the birth date, the other end wherever the question asks.
