Frequently Asked Questions

Can percentage change exceed 100%?

Yes. If the new value is more than double the original, percentage change exceeds 100%. For example, going from 10 to 30 is a 200% increase. Percentage decrease can never exceed 100% (you can't go below zero).

Can change exceed 100 percent?

Yes. Tripling equals 200 percent change.

Why is percentage change asymmetric?

A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not return to the original value. For example, $100 increased by 50% = $150. $150 decreased by 50% = $75, not $100. To recover from a 50% decrease, you need a 100% increase. This asymmetry is why percentage changes can be misleading and why log returns are used in quantitative finance.
